Blocking Rules Free For All

Here is a "triple option" run from "area wedge" blocking run from my DC Wing T, "Super" formation. The area wedge is directed at the first down lineman to the outside of the center and away from which ever side the noseguard is shaded - in this case the right DT. If the "wedgee" is in an even tech as shown, he'll be three man wedged (RG, RT &TE). If he were in an odd tech, such as a "3", he'd be two man wedged (RG&RT):

S1 S2
C B1 B2 C2
E1 T1 N T2 E2
O O O 0 O O O
O O
O
O

From RG to RTE wedges T2. Outside man of a three man wedge is responsible for backside safety. LG and C block N and work up to B1 via right "A" gap. LT blocks T1 to B2 (if B2 blitzes). LTE bucket steps and takes T1 if LT goes to B1 or E1 if E1 tries to go inside him. FB is the dive man headed at T2. QB's give/keep read is E2. If E2 sits or "boxes" (slants out), QB gives. If E2 crashes, QB pulls and options E2 with HB as pitchman. WB runs off or stalks C2. If FB doesn't get the ball, he blocks S2. If FB does get the ball he stays behind the wedge and reads B2 and cuts opposite direction of B2 while allowing the wedge to drive T2 back into the path of B2. Then he breaks it outside off tackle. If B2 tries to split the wedge or blitz "A", FB takes it outside early. QB, if he hands off, blocks E2. If pitch occurs, T2 will still be driven back into path of B1 and B2, forcing S1 to make the tackle. RTE will be keying S1 as he wedges T2 and look for a chance to pick him up. Remember! ball is inside FBZ so "anything goes" except "chop".

Same play. This time against a 4-3:

S1 S2
C W M S C2
E1 T T2 E2
O O O 0 O O O

C, RG, and RT wedge right T2. RT will look to come off and pick up S1 running the alley. RTE has "S" (Sam). LT and LG have left DT and work up to Will if he blitzes right side "A" gap. Left TE bucket steps and picks up anyone coming in front of him. QB reads E2 for give/keep. If FB does not get ball, he has S2. If FB gets the ball, he stays behind wedge and cuts opposite way Mike goes, or breaks it outside if the wedge reaches Mike. WB runs off/stalks corner. If QB gives, he blocks E2.

Same play. Defense 5-3:

F
C W M S C
E1 T N T2 E2
O O O 0 O O O
O O

RG and RT double T2. LG and C have N. LT has T. LTE bucket steps and takes anyone who crosses in front of him. RTE has Sam. WB runs off corner. If FB does not get ball, he has F as QB options E2. If FB gets ball, he stays behind wedge and cuts opposite direction Mike goes.

Unusual, huh? FB just stays behind wedge reading inside backer. If backer goes over the top, he cuts inside. If backer sits or blitzes, he breaks it outside. The DE being optioned is too far out to tackle the FB on a "keep" read so FB always gets his man. Requires a blocking TE.
