New Subject-Girls in football
By: coach dHere's the bottom line regarding girls playing youth football!
I've been a coach for 16 years now and it's been my observation that GIRLS CAN PLAY YOUTH FOOTBALL! Not only can they play, but they have an advantage of faster development and are usually faster and more skilled than the boys in the younger age groups!! After all, some girls are basically fully grown physically by the age of 11! I once coached a 10 year old girl who ran spring track and was unbeaten in all sprint events she ever competed in. She could run the 50yd dash in 6.7 seconds!! That's incredible speed for a 10 year old!! She dominated on the football field for two years!! That being said, once she had to play in the 12-13 age group it was obvious that the boys had started to become far too strong, exposive, and powerful, and thus they hit too hard for her as I watched her get hit repeatedly and get up slowly in obvious pain after almost every tackle. After the first three weeks she quit despite the fact that she was still the fastest player on the field!
Fact: Boys usually literally double in size and strength from 12-18, so by 12-13 I'd say that although some girls are just as fast in sprint speed, they lack the strength and power to be competitive with boys.
