what and how do you play safety in youth football?
By: Big BrotherSafety is just that SAFETY. He wont cover much, I don't know the age group of your kids, but tendency is to throw to the Wideout. Your safety needs to be able to read where the ball goes. He is your last line of defense. He is farthest back, the idea is noone gets past him. He doesn't need to be big or even hit big as long as noone gets to the outside before him. He has to be able to tackle or at least wrap up. But in little league kids love the Safety position because he gets clean up duties. When the other team is wrapped up and trying to break free the Safety come in for the tackling dummie hit. He needs to bedisciplined though, if it is a reverse he can't be all the way across the field on the wrong side. That is why he has to be fast and have good lines of pursuit. I am putting my second smallest guy there for now. He is fast reads well but is small. He has always played CB, but I want my 2 fastest guys at CB. The idea is if my CB ties the runner up, I will have the OLB doing the hitting and if anything is left over my safety will polish him off. Safety is fun, there is no where he is supposed to be. He gets to roam as long as he isn't caught sleeping. Again he is the last man to beat.
