Help coaching to be aggressive
By: Coach WadeI'm a big fan of half speed form tackling drills. My team ONLY does full speed tackling in games and scrimmages. With one exception: the bull in the ring drill.
We ran it a little differently. We put a player in the middle of the ring. A coach stood on the outside of the ring and threw a football to one of the outside players, who was instructed to "make it to the other side of the circle."
Having the coach pick the runner allowed us to match up size, weight, and skill evenly.
This drill, probably more than any other, helped motivate some of my weaker players. I found my starting left defensive end with it. Some of my weaker players were meek and timid in games, but thanks to the "Bull in the Ring" they were able to overcome that and make a positive impact for their team. It was the player's favorite drill.
