Practice Fields and Indoor Practice
By: Richard Todd
There are only two aspects of baseball practice that really need a "regulation sized" space. 1) Pitching from the mound. 2) A home-run hitting derby :-) Anything else can be done on any field where you can put two bases 90 feet apart, or have an alley that's 200 to 250 feet long (for long toss or relay throws) I'd only use the backstop for bullpen work. For hitting, the mechanics can be worked on with whiffle balls, or soft-toss screen drills. Even fielding throwing drills require only a portion of a field. You might want to check out some of the drills at WebBall. While "Round the bags" take a full diamond, the "double play drill" or the "goal post drill" don't All the other prep work - from power-lifting to wind-sprints can be done wherever.
