9yr old sick of outfield

I have coached on and off in coach pitch thru to majors. My son plays well and is in the IF on his teams. But... and it's a big But... He practices alot !! He is constantly wanting to play catch throw a baseball at the wall or take batting practice. I see that it is the parents of the kids that want their kid to play IF rather than OF but they dont work with the kid at all.
they think that the rec league pratcie once or twice a week (if they show up ) is suffient to make thier kid a top motch player and build his ability to play the key positions on the field.
this just isnt so.
I have had a kid come to me at the beginning of a season with his brand new glove (tag still hanging on it from Kmart) asking to be the pitcher. He never played ball before but his grandpa was a pitcher in the bigs. Come on... As a coach I gave him a try... I wanted to be fair. The kid couldn't hit the side of a barn from to feet. And he was 11yrs old. He played alot of OF...
I feel that if the kid can show me in practice that he can play the position, I will give him a try. But they have to prove to me that they know what they are doing.. Not just protecting themselves. they need to show that they know how to make the plays as well as field a ball. It all starts with practice. I tell them that they need to work on their skills outside of team practice. Just like anything else they have to work at it constantly to get better and perfect it. I have seen some do that.

My son also plays travel ball and he knows that he has to not only earn a position to play it but has to hold that level of play to keep it.
