Conducting tryouts

We held a try out for our travel team. We posted flyers and the mini golf courses (or usual places where kids hang out). We also had it posted in the sports section of the local paper (they did it for free). The actual coaches of the team did not score the kids (of course they were there and had final say). We brought in guys that the coaches knew. These guys know baseball and they did not have any kids trying out so they were totally unbiased. We had the parents fill out contact information and we had them sign a release of liability. We assigned kids numbers and the guys who were evaluating the kids only used the kids number (not the name). So when they gave their evaluations to the coaches the evaluators and the coaches picked the kids by the number. No names were placed with the number until the team was picked.

We explained this process to the parents before the try out. Every parent agreed that it is a totally fair process.

The parents were told that the coaches would only call the players that made the team and they would hear from us by a certain time. We did have some players who didn't make it call and since we kept the evaluation forms we told the parents how they did. We had no complaints at all.
