Help Me Understand

My kids are now a HS Junior and a college Freshman. Both are still playing. Oldest(College Fr.) All conference for 3 years, youngest (HS JR.) was all confernece as a Sophomore.

The oldest did play on two teams so I will give my 1 1/2 cents worth.

1. Why play on more than one team?

Played Rec Ball with his friends during the week. Only 10 games all season. PLayed tourement ball on Weekends with a more competitive team.

2. Doesn't that interfere with a child becoming well rounded and remaining one dimensional?

Don't understand why it would. He played baseball and soccer and football and Basketball. He was also in scouts.

3. What are you looking for in the second team and, if it is not available on the first team, why remain with it?

More games vs better competition. Remained with rec team to play with his friends.

4. Do you accept the position that what a player does before adolescence is developmental and does not determine whether or not he will continue into HS ball?

No, I do not accept that premise. From my experience the weaker youth players were the weaker High school players. those that continued to play. This who had the most success in youth leagues were the ones most likely to continue onto HS Ball and succeed

5. What considerations entered into your decision to allow your child to participate on more than one team?

That is what he wanted to do. My younger son wanted to play on a select team for league instead of a rec team so he only played on one team.
