Just Venting

I know everyone feels that having umps at every level is important, and it is. But, the cost and availability of umpires for that level and below has to take a back seat to the higher levels.

I've said before that our league gives the older boys the chance to supplement the umpiring corps but no one seemed to impressed. Now that the season is half over, I can give a much better analysis of how its been working.

The umpire in chief for our league gives everyone who wants to try some classes. There were 5 classes of 1 1/2 hours each and 1 field seminar that went 3 hours. The 1st year boys are only allowed to do farm (kids pitch) and Minor games.

If they've had at least 1 year, they are allowed to do Majors in pairs, never alone. After 2 years or more they are allowed to do minor games alone and Jr. games with a "seasoned" ump.

Do these kids do as good as an experienced ump? Heck no! But, they certainly do well enough in the positions they are put in to get the games played! They make a lot of mistakes, but it isn't the end of the world and the alternative stinks and they do get better! The nice thing is, they get paid to give something back to the game! Most of the boys make more than $100 per week, even at a reduced rate.
