Blocking the Bags

I agree with the post's so far on this topic.

Does Pony League mean leadoffs at this age? Regardless, the rule still applies about obstruction.

If a 9 yr old is blocking the base, I would presume it's because they do not know any better and haven't been taught. I would mention during the plate meeting to the Umpires (or ask the Umpire to bring this up) about players blocking base's.

If I was coaching this level and I had a player come back to the bag and was blocked without the ball. I would also mention in a loud voice so that the other dugout could hear to my player, "Watch the first baseman, he hasn't been coached properly on where to stand yet!" But that would be me.

Also get the player on first to take a step towards the outfield, so he can come to the backside of the bag, I prefer the runner to be on their feet, sliding headfirst back only on a 3&2/3&3 Lead off.

Also on pitch's make sure that the fielders are having their feet in fair territory, especially at 3rd, if they don't, notify the field Ump.

This blocking the bag stuff really grates me as causing unnecessary danger to both players and coach's who advocate blocking the bag. The Coach's should be made to go and try this in a college game, or I personally volunteer to be the runner and I'm sorry but, "Mama said to knock you out".
