LATE SWING

By: Kenneth Bean

Hi Thure

Our "diaper-ballers" down here don't hit pitching until they are seven to seven and ahalf. Don't be too concerned.

Soft toss with wiffle balls as you have read me describe it here, and as I draw the pictures in my book, is the fastest way I know to get a kiddo up to speed swinging at live pitching.

Younger kids need something "up close" to relate to.

Example: I took my six year old son trout fishing down in galveston bay in my boat. In that scenario, one casts out perhaps twenty yards or so with a live shrimp under a cork. Well, this was his first trip, he caught several two pound trout, and wasn't impressed at all, and spent the remainder of the morning playing with cars in the bottom of the boat. He fished about forty minutes.

Two weeks later, we stopped by a lake up country, I bought him a cane pole, bobber, and some worms. He sat on that stump and caught a few six inch long perch. over a period of perhaps four hours. He was so excited and he had to take them and show them to everybody he knew. He still talks about that trip. The best I understand it, it was the intimacy(closeness) with the process that made all the difference.

Best regards
Kenneth Bean
