A High School Boys Baseball Tourney, A Maryland Showcase for Our National Pastime

Press Release: The regions top HS baseball players will attend the 10th Annual Bear Classic over Labor Day weekend. The games begin at Joe Cannon Stad. & Arundel HS on Fri. Sept 1, at 5:45 pm, thru Mon. Sept 4. Amateur clubs from Md, Pa, Conn., NJ, & NY will attend. Teams attending the event in past includes national & regional teams such as LI Bulls, North Allegheny (Pa), Phila Reds, YRebels (Balt.), Jersey, FABL (NY), College Select (CT), LI Tigers, Bayside (NY), Am. Legion, Arundel Wildcats (Md) & others. A host team includes select all-stars & the best available "college prospect players". Tom 'Bear' Baron, the tourney director, says the Classic supports the development of this region's baseball talent, continues baseball opportunities for the boys who are graduating HS in 2001 & gain exposure to active college recruiters and scouts. Since ‘91, over 65 active Sr. & Jr. college recruiters, & scouts attend the event & it gets better each year. A partial listing of colleges attending in the past or getting information include: UofMd, Towson., JMU, Duke, GW, Clev. St., Ind, OSU, PennSt, UMBC, Tenn, JHU, Richmond, Pitt, ODU, VCU, GMU, Georgetown, Salisbury St., Catholic, Princeton, Mt. St. Mary's, St. Mary's, Navy, W&M, WVa., Shepherd, PGCC, several NAIA colleges & others. Media coverage for 2000 incl., Wash. Post, Baseball Am., www.webscores, & various local listings such as the Journals, Frederick, Mont., PG, Calvert & others. Games are played on great fields, Joe Cannon Stad., a beautiful AA ballpark, & Arundel HS where several pro players have played in their amateur careers.
