LL vs. Pony vs. AABC
By: Dave Kreiss
Danny, everyone grew up with LL. Todays world is different. Sounds like your on top of things asking these questions at his early age of 6. In order to know and do what is right you will need a clear understanding of the difference between recreational baseball and competative baseball since both are played by kids starting as low as age 8. Besides attending the local recreational leauge meetings, visit the websites of baseball organizations so you know the differences (my preference is USSSA which is www.usssa.com). The links to other sites can be found under baseball coaches links. Also, check out your local baseball academy for lessons since they can provide information about the organizations and teams available where you live. PONY and LL are recreational baseball leagues. AABC starts to lean more towards competative baseball. USSSA can provide a mixture of both. AAU is competative baseball. Now, find out where these teams play, what are the rules and regulations, go watch a game, how good is the competition level, talk to a coach, talk to the parents to people to find out the commitments and what its all about. Why? There is going to be a very important personal and logistical question which will impact your life and your sons life. You will have to decide "can I commit to competative baseball experience when my exceptional child is asked or wants to play competative baseball?" You will need to understand how competative baseball is played, what do the kids learn and experience, who are the good coaches and teams, costs, time, amount of travel, how do things work .... At that point you will know the right thing to do because you took the time to research the issues and will be prepared to make a very important decision. Can I, can my spouse, and can my family support my son in this endevor? If your family loves baseball, its a non event, a no brainer. If there are going to be hardships it is a tough choice with no right or wrong answer. Whatever path you choose, make sure you have a plan to keep it fun and play to get better. That is how he will ultimately learn from baseball how to achieve success and how to be a winner.
