field maintenance
By: Seadog
Jon, I maintain a 4 field complex 2 with grass infields and 60ft. bases, and 2 with skinned infields 1 tball size and 1 with up to 90" bases.I take care of the fields and snack shack/bathroom buildings year round in exchange for a house and utilities located on the complex. The bulk of my work is donr between March and September. I fertilize twice a year , during the season I mow every 4-5 days.We have a sprinkler system for the fields, the common areas need to be watered with hose and sprinkler. The infield grass is a maint. headache, trying to keep the lips of the grass building up. We have multiple pitching rubbers on 3 of the fields.Softball,LL majors,LL juniors, and pony are played on these fields along with tball on the mini field Fertilizer is $900 a yr.Infield soil is $600 a yr.Grass killer for the infields during the off season and the fence lines is $500 a yr.Gas for the mower is $400-$600 a yr.I use my truck to pull a homemade sled drag during the season to level with once a week. The fields are also spiked dragged 1 a week with a homemade drag and my truck. The fields are then screened dragged before each game. The only equip the league has is a Riding lawnmower, a weedeater, and misc. hand tools. Any league with a 4 field complex I would recommend a small tractor with a 3 pt. hitch. Then you could use commercial attachments for aeration, overseeding, fertilizing, leveling, dirt moving and even mowing. It would also be nice to have some water removal equipment to use during the season and a budget for Diamond dry or something similar. Hope this helps E mail me if you have specific questions SEADOG
