SetPro stuff
By: Randy Dykstra
First off I like to say Set-Pro is one of the only training device companies I know that base their equipment on scientific FACT and studies as opposed to opinions (or some pro player's endorsement)... and one of the few that is willing to share their knowledge with you without you having to pay up front for it! I have owned most of the Set pro equipment for a couple years now.... Basically...they provide a TRAINING program and devices to implement that program. There ideas (and I really like them) is that to effectively train you have to have some sort of feedback to the quality of your training. Also over/underload training is the basis of their program. Basically, they manufacture a monitor that displays Bat swing speed. They also have an optional light device to simulate a pitch being sent to you and can measure your reaction times to it. In addition, they will sell you sevral other devices that can be used as part of their program... Pro-Cut bat weight, Power Fins, Corkball bat (speed bat), and for pitching ... Weighted baseballs, a Speed chek monitor, etc... All of these items can be purchased thru SetPro or elsewhere.... The only thing I dislike is that they mark up the prices on most of these additional items.... for instance (these prices are from 2 years ago and are only as good as my memory) Set Pro sold the speed check device for $299 and I bought it for $195 (It now sells at Baseball Express for $75). The pro-cuts were around $29 and I purchased one for around $20.... Weighted balls were (?) around $10-12 you can buy them for $6.95 now.. Only one other company sells a bat swing speed monitor(that I know of) and I don't beleive it can do all the things Set Pro's can..plus it is more expensive... So Set-pro is the place to go for it...(around $300-350..check their site) Now about the program... I assumed you've read their website and it give more information than I will ever be able to type... but as an Engineer (and Baseball coach and ex-national level athlete), I am really impressed with what they present and the data that supports their methods and ideas. I love the program... Now I have a 12 year old and he's not ready for a full time training program, (but soon will be) (need to keep the sport just a game for a while longer) but we use it off and on and we do see results.... Not quite as dramatic as some of Set-Pros claims.... But, it is one of the few devices I have purchased and was immediately impressed with and still use with some regularity (besides pitching machine and batting tees)
