Metal cleats?

By: Randy Dykstra

My son has been using metal cleats since he was 9 years old... 3 years ago.... All the travel team is our area use then for 9u on up....except at tournaments which restrict them (a couple a year)...

In that time I have I have actually seen more accidents with kids wearing rubber than I have with metal.... The worst one being where a got his leags twisted at 2b and the runner slid in to him.... Twisted knee out 3 weeks....

There are the occasional nicks or small cuts around 2B...but I've never seen anything serious....

That reminds of our 10 yo AABC tournament.... At regionals and Nationals, they required the use of 10 factor RIF balls.... I saw more injuries with that ball than the rest of the 3 years of travel ball (usings hard balls). It bounces more and I saw two kids take one right between the eyes and this was the best 10 yo... in the country... Sometimes you change the game for safety concerns and you create and much more serious problem...
