Who Are You?
By: Tom Magedanz
Hi, I only post occasionally but enjoy this site very much. I'm 49 and some of my earliest memories are of my Dad playing baseball with a team of local farm neighbors on a country baseball field (one mile west of the Minnesota-SD border on US 212, to be exact); most years the outfield "fence" was an actual cornfield. No bleachers, but people would park cars along the foul lines and honk the horns when someone did good. (Don't know how they protected their windshields.) I have a photo in my office of my Dad hitting on that field in 1955 (decent knee cock/inward turn, but hands are pretty low). Dad became a Cubs fan in 1938 when they got Dizzy Dean and has inflicted this on my son. I played Legion and amateur baseball; we have no high school baseball here. I still play softball but miss baseball. I coached my son from age 7-12 and coached two years without my son in a 13-14 house league while he played on the local "Teener" team for 16U which travels and has a real coach. I only discovered the library and baseball instructional books about 3 years ago; wish I'd done that much earlier when my son was just starting out (it turns out I knew a lot less about baseball from my playing days than I thought). My wife is a Filipina whom I met in the Peace Corps in 1979 and we have a daughter 17 and a son 15. My military time was ten years earlier with 1st Marine Div. in Vietnam (they made us walk everywhere - none of this perfectly good airplane stuff as discussed in the earlier posts below -- and I missed the 1969-70 seasons). I work as staff for the state legislature. Thanks for making this site informative and enjoyable.
