Batting Cages part Deux....no more tokens!

By: Scott R
Add to Mixx!

Finally finished! (Note: this is a long reply)

With regards to Darrell for being patient (also DRP,
Single L, etc.) in my answer. You'd think I have
a full time job, 3 teens all playing ball, and a Fall
ball team to boot.....HEY, life is grand.

Equipment - after a lot of "net" searching, store
looking, and answers from all you good folks I settled
on the following:

Pitching machine(s):
ATEC Casey - price $1535, quality top model, pitches to
90+ and all the pitches, angles/tilts for fly balls and
grounders if needed. I got this one for my older boys,
yet my LL team can use...has dual controls and recommended
settings on machine for LL, HS, and above. NOT very portable,
but tri-pod legs detach very easily if you wanted to take
to practice.
ATEC Streak (softball) - price $299, I settled on this
for my daughter who plays club ball and HS, couldn't afford
another large machine, and after conferring on the web with
with Sherri S. Also checked it out in a local sports shop.
Of all the equipment I've seen this machine surprised me the
most. VERY portable, legs/base come off with one screw knob
leaving you with just two light pieces to transport. Machine
angles for grounders and fly balls.....pitches a variety of
pitches. It pitches a regulation size baseball or softball
(depending on model you choose) but these balls are made out
of a light weight/dense foam. That was the part I was worried
about but after seeing the machine at a store and checking
out the balls I found they weren't a nerf type foam. My 16/18
year old boys were surprised at the speed and movement these
balls produced.....good for a youth team or above. The softball
curve was really something to see.
Only drawback I've found is that the machine is so light that
when the softball comes out a slight deflection of the machine has
you re-adjusting the direction. I'm told this is not true with
the baseball model. I plan to hang a weight from the center knob to
hold it more steady.

"L' Screen - price $199, 6-foot model, 1" chrome plated, square
tube frame. Very sturdy, quality!

20-ball feeder - price $299, used with ATEC Casey to feed balls.
(Dad can't always be around to feed machine)

All this above equipment was ordered from Instant Baseball here
in California, 1-800-293-0299.

Cage Net - price $665, 60 x 12 x 12, #30 nylon, green, spray coated.
Rings are attached in the corners and center on ends and at 30' mark
(width). These were really helpful when I used turnbuckles to attach
net to my poles. Nylon rope runs the length of the net down the
sides and through the middle that assists in holding up the net and
attachment. A entry type flap is cut into one corner end that can be
tied/secured for entry/exit. Rope attached for this purpose
Overall, a good, quality, well-made net....I had trouble with the
company mixing up the weight/size of the net that resulted in triple
the shipping charges but they are going to refund the difference (still
waiting on the check). If needed: www.nylonnet.com

Cage - price $500 (approx; depending on how much hardware, materials you
want to put into your cage).
8 x 14' galvanized steel poles, 2-3/8" OD (main posts)
4 x 12' galvanized center/cross rails 1-7/8" OD
6 x 20' galvanized support rails (length)
(End caps, clamps, hardware, cement
